Bonn Law QRD U13 AAA Championship Recap

After a very exciting, action-packed weekend, the U13 Red Devils are back as OMHA Champions for the second time in 3 seasons.

The boys proved that hard work really does pay off on their way to the Red Hats, as all 5 games were full of ups and downs and everything in between. On Friday, the Devils would start the tournament with a 3-0 win over The York Simcoe Express. Matt Travers shut the door in net to earn the shutout. Cameron Stevens, Mason Whalen and James Gullage lit the lamp for the team, while Whalen, Edmund Dowling, Oliver McCulloch, Noah Hughes and Fisher Kernohan all added assists.

In their second game of the day, the Red Devils would fall short and were on the losing end of a 4-2 game against The Hamilton Steel. Shea Teather and Rowyn Haley did the scoring in the game. Chipping in with helpers on the goals were Kernohan and Austin Pettey. Dax Sage was solid in net, giving his team a chance to win.

In their only game of the day on Saturday, the Red Devils would face the Southern Tier Admirals. The two teams were tied in the standings, as well as in goal percentage and penalty minutes. In a back-and-forth game that kept fans on the edge of their seats, it was the Admirals who struck first in the opening period of the game. The teams would exchange chances in the second and both goalies came up big for their team. Miller Nicholson buried the lone goal for the Red Devils on a pass from Mason Whalen, midway through the third period. The two teams were tied 1-1 at the final buzzer, and The Red Devils would advance due to having one less penalty. Matt Travers stood tall between the pipes in the game.

On Sunday, the Red Devils would face the very talented Oakville Rangers. The two teams are well known to one another, and the games are always exceptionally competitive! The Red Devils got off to a quick start as Mason Whalen put his team up 2-0 in the first period, scoring two goals in 2 minutes for his team. The Rangers came storming back, scoring three straight goals of their own to go up 3-2 in the third. Kyler Patterson tied the game at three on a beauty breakaway pass from Noah Hughes. Both teams continued to battle, before Tyler Martin scored the game winning goal on the powerplay, assisted by Patterson and Whalen. Matt Travers was solid in net for the win.

In the OMHA Championship game, the Red Devils would face the Hamilton Steel for the second time in the tournament. Once again, Mason Whalen would put his team up by a goal early in the first period on a pass from Kernohan. The Steel came roaring back, scoring two of their own and taking a 2-1 lead heading into the final period. Rowyn Haley would tie the game for his team at the 12:33 mark of the third, and the two teams continued to battle it out until the final buzzer. The Red Devils did not disappoint in OT, and proved that their hard work had paid off, as they took it to The Steel in the overtime period. Matt Travers shut the door in net and Miller Nicholson buried a beauty goal half way through OT, to win the game for his team.

The coaching staff are extremely proud of the team for their resiliency, hard work, sportsmanship, and team play over the entire weekend. These boys played their hearts out and really earned those Red Hats! The coaches and players would like to thank their families and friends for all the wonderful support over the weekend. We could not have done it without all of you!! We would also like to congratulate the U15 Red Devils on Their Red Hats, as well as the U11 Red Devils on their silver medal.
