Seven Games and Six Wins for the U11 Madison Excavating Red Devils this Week

While the game against the Peterborough Petes might have been delayed by ten days due to an interruption from Mother Nature, that only fuelled the Madison Excavating Quinte Red Devils U11s to put forth an even more determined effort during the rescheduled game. QRD hosted the Petes in Madoc this past Tuesday and did not disappoint. Coulter Watson would make his mark with under five minutes left in the first period, scoring the first goal of the game, and what would end up being the game-winner. Minutes later, Everett Brown would add an insurance marker, allowing the Devils to end the first period with a two-goal lead. The second period played out in a similar fashion, with QRD scoring two more consecutive goals. Max Bucknell found the back of the net first, followed shortly after with a tally from Cooper Plumley. Spirits and energy were high as QRD would begin the third period with a four-goal lead. Not even two minutes in, and Plumley was at it again, scoring his second goal of the game and the fifth for QRD. When the final buzzer sounded, the QRD fans went wild, excited by the 5-0 victory. Between the pipes, Hayden Tripp earned his second shutout of the season.

Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs 30th Annual Hockey Classic Tournament Recap: December 2nd-4th

The Madison Excavating QRD U11s had a busy and highly successful weekend, as they travelled to Hamilton and competed in their third tournament of the 2022-2023 season. The QRD U11s finished with a 5-1-0 record after round robin play. The boys had five wins under their belts after the quarter-final game, but unfortunately lost in the semi-final game to the London Jr. Knights. The game was extremely close, and the boys should be extremely proud of their efforts throughout the entire weekend.

Friday, December 2nd: Game 1

The Madison Excavating QRD U11s started off strong with a win against the Clarington Toros to begin the tournament. The first period nearly finished without a goal from either side. With just two seconds left, Blake McManus would change that, burying the puck in the back of Clarington’s net with the game-winning goal. Period two would see fierce competition from both teams, but neither side would score. QRD altered that narrative with a second goal in the third period from Cooper Plumley. In net, Ben Larmer successfully earned his second shutout of the season.

Friday, December 2nd: Game 2

Later that evening, QRD would take on the Gloucester Rangers. Regardless of the late-night game, QRD was ready to bring it. At the end of period one, QRD was in the lead with the lone goal from Dylan Chalk. The Rangers managed to tie it up briefly in the second period, however, QRD rallied minutes later with the game-winning goal from Reed Kavanagh. It was downhill from there for the Rangers. The final three minutes of the period would see Cooper Plumley score two goals. He then opened the scoring in the third period too, with a hat trick. QRD was sitting pretty with their four-goal lead. Then, with only two minutes and ten seconds left in the game, Blake Sills would blast a puck past Gloucester’s goalie, scoring the sixth goal for QRD. The game ended in a 6-1 victory for QRD, the team’s second win that day. Between the pipes, Hayden Tripp helped to secure the win.

Saturday, December 3rd: Game 1

Late Saturday afternoon, QRD would go head-to-head with the Credit River Capitals. The first period was coming to a close when Kade Osterhout scored, not one, but two back-to-back goals, allowing QRD to begin period two with a two-goal lead. Early in the second period, the Capitals would then score, igniting a fire under the QRD boys. Coulter Watson would bury a puck about five minutes after Credit River’s first goal. Roughly five minutes after that, the Capitals would score two back-to-back goals in quick succession. Kade Osterhout then finished off his hat trick, to which the Capitals again responded. It was a four-goal tie going into the third period. After some back-and-forth action for the first nine and a half minutes of the period, the Capitals would score their fifth and final goal of the game. Two minutes later, Everett Brown would score QRD’s fifth goal to tie things up once again. In the final forty-eight seconds of the game, Kade Osterhout found the back of the net again, scoring his fourth goal of the game; the game-winning goal. The game ended in a 6-5 victory for QRD - their third win of the tournament. Goaltender, Ben Larmer, made some timely saves and worked hard to keep the game close.

Saturday, December 3rd: Game 2

Saturday evening would again end in success, as QRD took on the Waterloo Wolves. The first period would see both teams fighting hard to score, but neither had success. The second period, however, was dominated by QRD. A mere twenty-seven seconds into the second, Kade Whelan would find the back of the net, opening the scoring for QRD. With five minutes and twenty-seconds left in the second, Everett Brown would score the game-winning goal. Kade Osterhout then added an insurance marker a little over two minutes later, and QRD took a 3-0 lead after two periods. In the third, Waterloo would make a feeble attempt at a comeback, with their lone goal coming early on. QRD answered the lone Waterloo goal with one from Robbie Robinson. The game ended in a 4-1 win for QRD, solidifying their spot in a quarter-final game on Sunday. In net, Hayden Tripp made some stellar saves and helped to secure the win.

Sunday, December 4th: Game 1

After a late game on Saturday night, QRD was back on the ice early Sunday morning for a quarter-final game against the Niagara North Stars. The winning streak would continue, with another amazing game from QRD. Things got off to a rocky start, with the North Stars being the sole goal-scorers in the first period. QRD would pick things up quickly, however, in the second period. Two minutes in, Dylan Chalk blasted the puck past Niagara’s goalie, opening the scoring for QRD. About four minutes later, Kade Osterhout would add an insurance marker to give QRD a 2-1 lead. The North Stars would tie things up four minutes later with a second goal of their own. Everett Brown then buried the puck with one minute and thirty-eight seconds left in the period. QRD was not done either. With only nine seconds until the end of period two, Kade Whelan would score the game-winning goal. QRD began the third period with a 4-2 lead. Three minutes into the third, Kade Whelan found the back of the net for the second time, followed up by a Robbie Robinson bomb from the point, extending QRD’s lead to 6-2. The North Stars would make one final plea to get back onto the scoreboard, with a final goal coming two minutes and seventeen seconds before the final buzzer. QRD would earn their fifth win of the tournament, and a spot in a semi-final game, with a final score of 6-3. In net, Ben Larmer displayed some excellent goaltending skills, helping to earn the win.

Sunday, December 4th: Game 2

It was feeling like déja vu for QRD. They were once again head-to-head with the London Jr. Knights, but this time for a semi-final game rather than the quarter-final game that they matched up in a couple of weeks ago in a tournament in Niagara Falls. The first period was a challenging one for QRD. The Knights would score three consecutive goals and finish the first period with a three-goal lead. Their steam had run out, however, and they failed to score another goal for the rest of the game. The second period would see a lone goal, skillfully scored by Max Bucknell, with only one minute and twenty-two seconds left until the end of the period. QRD continued to battle back in the third, when Blake McManus buried a shot from the point with just over ten minutes to play. There was a glimmer of hope for QRD, but unfortunately, the semi-final game ended with their only loss this weekend; the final score being 3-2 for the Knights. In net, Hayden Tripp worked hard to keep his team in the game.

Despite not moving on to the finals, the team should be incredibly proud of making it to the semi-finals. With a phenomenal display of teamwork, QRD netted twenty-six goals this weekend and only allowed twelve goals against. Moreover, the team continued to build on their strengths and had great success overall.

Coach’s Corner with Head Coach Andrew Brown

“What a great weekend of hockey and team building. We brought our consistency and drive to be better to another level. Coaches are very proud and a special shout out to both goaltenders on a great weekend.”
