The Madison Excavating Major Atoms win silver at the OMHA Finals in Markham! After a season filled with success the Major Atom Devils earned their way to compete in the OMHA after beating out York-Simcoe in the semi-finals. The Devils travelled to Markham this weekend to compete in the OMHA Finals tournament.

Game one Friday had Quinte facing the Halton Hurricanes. Thomas Kuipers opened up scoring for the Devils early in the first. Halton answered back shortly after to tie the game and took the lead before then end of the first. Quinte would be undetered and came out flying in the second to score three goals and reclaim the lead. Scoring in the second were Ty Therrien, Gage Butcher and Kuipers. Assists came from Beckett Ewart, Butcher, Landon Wright, Liam Philip and Jared Langdon. Kirk Stevenson added one more in the third to make it a 5-2 Quinte victory. Glen McInnes stood tall in the net.

Friday's second match up had Quinte playing a strong Hamilton Bulldogs team. Again it was the opponent who opened up the scoring but the Devils wasted no time tying it up on a beauty from Philip on the set up from Kuipers. Philip would score again early in the second to take the lead, assisted by Langdon and Ben Danford. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on to tie it again before the end of the second. The third saw Quinte working hard to generate offence and it paid off as Brody Partridge would score an unassisted goal midway through the third to seal the 3-2 win. Dean Spry protected the Quinte cage.

Saturday, game one, had the Devils facing a familiar team as they were up against the York-Simcoe Express. The Express were eager to battle after being knocked out by the Devils in the semis and hit the scoreboard first. The Devils weren't shaken and would make it York-Simcoe's only goal of the game as Wright started the offence to tie the game on the set up from Braedyn Rogers. Partridge would add the go ahead goal, assisted by Ewart. Ewart shortly after added one of his own, assisted by Kuipers. The Devils continued to shut down the Express offence and created more scoring chances throughout the game. Philip made it 4-1 on the pass from Langdon. Partridge, with his second of the game, would add the empty netter to seal the 5-1 for the Devils. McInnes was the in the net for the game.

Game two Saturday had Quinte playing against the host Markham Waxers. The two teams were well matched in speed and determination. Despite numerous opportunities in both ends it was the Waxers who managed to hit the scoreboard in the first. Quinte continued to turn Markham away as they fought to add to their lead and the second ended with no change in the score. The Devils never let up and battled hard against the home town favourites. In the end it was the Waxers added one more to the scoreboard to make it 0-2. Spry made many key saves throughout the game. Quinte would record their first loss of the tournament but earned an opportunity to meet the Waxers again in the gold medal round on Sunday.

Gold medal Sunday had Quinte facing the Markham Waxers again. The Devils were a determined group and came out strong against the home team. The Devils drove hard to the net creating many scoring chances throughout the first period. It was the Waxers who managed 2 goals in the first, but the Devils cut their lead to one with a goal of their own before the end of the first.  To the cheers of the Quinte crowd it was Kuipers who scored for the Devils assisted by Langdon off the face off.  The second period saw back and forth action but the bounces were not in the Devils favour despite their efforts. The Waxers added two quick goals before the end of the second set putting Quinte in tough for the third. The Devils did not let up as they continued to battle. In the end the 4-1 loss for Quinte was not a score indicative of their play throughout the game. Spry was in net for the final game. The Major Atoms would like to extend a special thanks to their sponsors, families and fans for a great 2016/17 season.
