OMHA AAA Minor Midget Champions
This past weekend, the Foley Bus Lines Minor Midget Red Devils successfully defended their title as OMHA Champions by defeating the Oshawa Generals 5-1 in the Sunday Gold medal final. In game one of the round robin tournament, the Devils found themselves up against a familiar foe as they took on the Whitby Wildcats at 2pm Friday. Both teams seem to play a conservative game to start the scoreless first period until Quinte finally drew first blood with two in the second. Heading out of the flood, the Wildcats made things interesting as they got the game within one early in the third period with a power play marker.

Fortunately, the Devils PP unit was also up for the task as they added two power play markers of their own in the third to take the game with a 4-1 final. Game two Friday night had the locals up against the Niagara North Stars where they found themselves trailing after the first by one. The second proved to be too much for the Stars as the Devils poured five into the net and ultimately held on for a 5-2 win and a 2-0 Friday start to the tournament. Saturday game three had the Devils playing home team versus the Southern Tier Admirals. The game started off just how the Devils would have hoped as they got out to a two goal lead early but squandered that as they gave up two late to close out the first frame knotted at two. The Devils won the second period with a three to one edge before locking down the third and eventually taking the contest with a 6-4 final and clinching a spot in the gold medal game Sunday. Game four Saturday night was just a formality as the Devils squared off against the Oshawa Generals that had also secured participation in the gold medal game for Sunday. The momentum of the game went back and forth a few times but both teams were playing a little cautious in preparation for the Sunday gold medal game. The Red Devils did end up taking the contest with a 4-3 win and securing home ice in the final with their 4-0 round robin finish. The supportive Quinte region packed the CAA Arena to the tune of about 1500 fans for the Sunday gold medal game at 12:30. Regrettably, the home town Devils had to spend nine of the fifteen minute first period killing penalties so the boys couldn’t really get it going as much as they would have liked. Two late period goals including a last second floater from the neutral zone got the Devils fans on their feet and provided the Devils with an all-important two goal lead after the first. With the arena buzzing now, the Devils kept their foot on the gas and added two more before the intermission. The teams traded goals in the third but it was not enough for the Gens as the Quinte Red Devils celebrated as the clock ticked down with a 5-1 final on the board. The boys and staff emptied the bench on to the ice to celebrate their OMHA AAA Minor Midget Gold medal performance. Next Action…..The Foley Bus Lines Devils hope to add the cherry on top as they head to OHL CUP March 17-23rd in Toronto.
