Boston Pizza Icefest Tournament
The Stampkrete QRD U12’s travelled to Peterborough on the weekend to compete in their first tournament of the year!

On Thursday they battled the Halton Hurricanes to a controversial 2-2 tie (tournament rules stated “No Tie Games”! Following a tournament committee meeting, it was decided whomever finished higher in the round-robin standings would receive the crucial extra point for the win.

On Friday morning the Stampkrete QRD U12’s used this extra motivation to play an exciting game vs. the Don Mills Flyers. After regulation time, the game was tied 2-2, with QRD serving 2 minor penalties. For the 1stminute of OT, the game was played 5-on-3…then for the next minute 4-on-3.  With a great team effort QRD killed off both penalties, which resulted in a final minute of OT played 1-on-1.  Trent Clow made a dazzling play just seconds into the overtime to score an exhilarating victory for the Stampkrete QRD U12’s!

Following the game, the team got together for a team meal at tournament sponsor Boston Pizza. Joining the team for lunch was QRD 2004 Alumnus Donovan McCoy (current Peterborough Petes OHL). The players and parents were thrilled to hear of Donovan’s experiences (multiple OMHA Championships, OHL 1stround pick, Team Canada experience, etc.) Quite an opportunity for the team to meet such an amazing hockey player and person!

Friday afternoon, QRD played their second game of the day vs. Ottawa Silver Sevens.  After QRD squandered a 4 goal lead, they showed great resilience to go on to win the contest 6-4!

With an early 7:30am tilt Saturday morning, QRD U12’s faced off vs. Elgin Middlesex.  QRD played a complete game, securing a 4-1 victory.  This guaranteed them the 1stplace seeding going into the quarter-finals!

After spending a long day in Peterborough, the QRD U12’s faced off against the 8thseed (Halton Hurricanes) in the quarter-finals. Halton lead throughout the game, but Quinte fought hard to battle back. However, with 11 seconds left on the clock Halton scored in the empty net (goalie pulled) to pull off the 6-4 upset!

The Stampkrete QRD U12’s plan on recovering from some injuries and get set for a great week of practices before hosting a league home game this Saturday in Marmora @ 4:45pm!
