Gillespies Tree Service QRD U13’s Weekly Report - Nov 14, 2022
THE GILLESPIE’S TREE SERVICE U13’s BRING HOME THE NIAGARA NORTH FRONT ROW CLASSIC CUP THIS WEEKEND IN O.T !!

It was a very successful weekend for the Gillespie’s Tree Service U13 Quinte Red Devils. The Niagara North Stars Classic Tourney hosted some great AAA teams from the ETA and the GTHL and went undefeated!

In the first game on Friday, QRD faced Hamilton which came out flying against the Red Devils. Ryerson Swan got the start in goal and was outstanding. Pound for pound QRD had a lot of push back and finally broke through with Joey Seguin scoring the first goal of the tourney on a breakaway. Quinte followed up with 4 more goals from Marion, Martin, Dahle and Clow. Assists to Hooey, Laurin, Martin, Clow & Seguin. QRD went on to a 5-0 win. It was a great start to the weekend.

In the second game Quinte faced a league rival in the Markham Waxers. Nathan Ferris got the start and came up with some great saves and a shutout in this penalty filled contest. Andrew Dewar scored on a wrist shot from the point for his first off the year. Laurin, Whelan and Lowry followed up with goals. Maeve Aird with the only noted assist. Like game one QRD was just too much for them to handle and for the second game in a row recorded a second shutout winning 4-0.

The third game on Saturday morning Quinte faced Chatham Cyclones. Easton Thompson and Lauchlan Whelan had 2 goal games. Andrew Laurin Joey Seguin potted the other 2. Assists to B.Aird, Marion, Martin, Dahle and Seguin. With a 6-0 win, Ferriss recorded his second shutout victory and QRD recorded 9 full periods without being scored on.

In our fourth game we saw the hometown team Niagara North Stars face off against the Devils. It was a tight game and Jax Martin, Liam Marion, Coen Lowry and Joey Seguin chipped in with single goals to lead the Red Devils to a 4-3 win. Ryerson Swan got the win in net. Assist to Harold, Whelan, Wright, Lowry, M. Aird, Dewar and Laurin. This put Quinte in first in their division and we were off to the semi finals Sunday.

Game number 5 was a big hill to climb as QRD faced off against Clarington who was a top team in the OMHA last season. Nathan Ferriss got the start and would only surrender 2 goals as the Devils played fantastic. Ewan Dale set up a beauty plus added a great goal to lead the Devils to a 5-2 win. Marion, Thompson, Martin and Whelan all netted singles. M.Aird, Whelan, Laurin and Dewar with the assists. The team defensively was outstanding and Quinte was now headed to the finals against the GTHL Mississauga Senators who knocked YSE off in their semi game.

The finals had a lot of excitement. Led by both team captains Lauchlan Whelan and Trent Clow, the Red Devils came out flying. Easton Thompson opened up the scoring but the Sens wouldn't lay down. They kept coming but the Red Devils would battle back and before the second it was 4-1 QRD. In the third the Sens came out determined, they tied the game at 4-4 and QRD was back on their heels. Trent Clow broke the tie with a PP goal but the Sens came back to tie it up again 5-5. Overtime would see 3 on 3 and it would last 10 minutes. The period was about to end and the Devils broke out of their end with the puck and it was Brechyn Aird on a pass from Whelan that found the net off the shoulder of the Sens goalie. It was celebration time. QRD WINS THE CUP in OT 6-5!!  Other goals by Thompson again and Seguin.  Assists to Whelan, Dahle, Seguin, Wright, Hooey and B. Aird.  Ryerson Swan had a few highlight reel saves in net to keep us in the game!! What an incredible team effort this weekend by all 17 players!
