The Pond at Rhino Sports and Playland Minor Midgets played in the Toronto Marlboro Holiday Classic
Game #1 - Markham Majors
The Minor Midget Red Devils played against the Markham Majors in their opening game of the tournament. The Red Devils won the game 5-3 but played like they had been off the ice for a few days and it showed. Goals were scored by Logan White, Daniel Panetta(3) and Jake Campbell while assists went to Jake Campbell, Connor Kennedy, Dalton Bancroft, Michael Andrews(2), Zach Uens, Logan White, Derrick Vos and Emmet Pierce.
Game #2 – Dayton Stealth
The Red Devils came out strong and early and had shaken the effects of a few days off with their second game of the day beating the Stealth 11-0. Ethan Taylor was in net for the shutout. Goals were scored by Graham Dickerson, Jake Campbell(2), Daniel Panetta(2), Emmet Pierce, Matt Cawker, Michael Andrews(2), Bailey Matthews and Dalton Bancroft and assists went to Daniel Panetta(3), Bailey Matthews(2), Graham Dickerson(4), Carden Guerin(2), Dalton Bancroft(2), Jake Campbell, Zach Uens and Michael Andrews.
Game #3 – Burlington Eagles
The Red Devils opened the scoring in the first three minutes but then let the Eagles back in the games shortly after. Then as good teams do they had a few push back shifts and went on a 6 straight goal outburst to beat the Eagles 7-1. Goals went to Dalton Bancroft(2), Emmet Pierce(2), Jake Campbell(2) and Matt Cawker while assists went to Michael Andrews(2), Logan White(3), Jake Campbell, Emmet Pierce(2), Graham Dickerson, Derrick Vos and Daniel Panetta. Brennan Bush was in net for the victory and played a spectacular game setting the stage for a showdown with the London Knights.
Game #4 – London JR. Knights
The Red Devils played their third game in 18 hours while it would only be London’s first game in the same time frame. No excuses at this level of hockey however sometimes the reality of the game and life needs to be mentioned in order to keep things in perspective. London would score first but the Devils answered back and were in the game and carried some of the play against the 3rd ranked team in Ontario. Penalties would be an issue as you can’t beat great teams short-handed and give them 5 on 3 opportunities and expect to win and the Red Devils would run out of gas midway through the game and lose 6-1. Ethan Taylor was in net for the loss and the lone goal was scored by Daniel Panetta.
Quarter Final Game - Ajax
In order to move on to the sweet 16, the Red Devils would need some help from some other teams and would play the Ajax-Pickering Raiders in the Quarter Final Game and would lose 5-2. Ethan Taylor would play in net and took the loss. Goals were scored by Matt Cawker and Logan White while assists went to Graham Dickerson, Derrick Vos, Carden Guerin and Connor Kennedy.
Vanderlaan Building Products - Minor Bantam
In the final two league games of 2016 the Vanderlaan Minor Bantams were away from home to take on the Whitby Wildcats and Oshawa Generals.
On December 16, the Devil's played to a 2-2 tie with the Wildcats. Goals were scored by Daniel Michaud and Nathanial Burelle with helpers from Zack Brooks and Ben White. Dixon Grimes was in net for the Devils.
On Dec. 20, the Devil's faced off against the Oshawa Generals. The Devils would come out strong taking a 3-0 lead with goals from Nathanial Burelle, Lucas Culhane and Daniel Michaud. Helpers coming from Jett Butler (2), Clayton Farrow, Brock Kelsh and Zack Brooks. Oshawa had a solid third period netting four goals and winning the game 4-3. Ethan Fraser was in net for the Devils.
The Vanderlaan Minor Bantams attended the Toronto Marlboros Holiday Classic from Dec 27-29th to take on some of the best teams in Ontario. The first game of the tournament would match the Red Devils against the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers. The Devils would be the first on the board scoring in the second period with a goal from Daniel Michaud.
The third period started with a short hand goal scored by Ben White putting the Devils up 2-0. Philadelphia would answer back as would the Red Devils with a goal from Aiden Treverton, assisted by Ethan Broek. Philadelphia would score one more but time would run out in the third and the Devils win with a final score of 3-2. Dixon Grimes was solid in net for the win. Blake Maracle was awarded player of the game.
The second game the Red Devils would take on the host team the Toronto Marlboros. The Devil's would again be first on the board with a goal from Ben White, assisted by Ethan Broek in the second period. The Marlies would answer back with two goals, but with 21 seconds left on the clock Brock Kelsh scored, assisted by Zack Brooks and Ben White. The Devil's would hold Toronto to a 2-2 tie until 2:49 in the third when the Marlboros scored. Toronto would secure the win with an empty net goal, winning 4-2. Ethan Fraser was outstanding in net despite the loss.
On Dec. 28 the team faced off against the Ottawa Jr. 67's. The Devils were able to keep the 67's off the score board in the first period, however, the 67's would find the back of the net in both the second and third period and the Devils were unable to answer back. The Devils would lose the game with the final score of 3-0. Dixon Grimes was in net.
The final game of the tournament the Red Devils squared off against the Cambridge Hawks. The Devil's would be first on the score board early in the first period with goal from Jett Butler, assisted by Daniel Michaud. Before the period ended the Hawks would also find the back of the net. Cambridge would go on to score unanswered goals in both the second and third periods. Devils lose with a final score of 3-1.
On Deck: The Vanderlaan Minor Bantams host the Whitby Wildcats Wednesday January 4th at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre at 7:45 pm.
Free Flow Petroleum - Bantam
The Free Flow Petroleum Major Bantam Quinte Red Devils competed in two league games over the holidays and earned all four points. The first game took place in Kingston and the Red Devils got off to a very quick start. Five minutes into the first period Quinte scored their first goal and then scored three more in a little over one minute of playing time. Kingston scored their only goal of the game late in the first but the devils answered that goal late in the second and skated to a 5-1 win. The Quinte offense was led by Cole McGuire, Curtis Dicks and Riley St. Pierre who each had a goal and an assist.Jacob Vreugdenhil also scored. Jaxen Boyer had two assists while single assists went to Jacob Gilbert, Gavyn Stevenson, Isaac Langdon and Marshall McFarland.
Following the Christmas break the Red Devils travelled to Whitby to take on the wild cats. Following a scoreless first period the devils opened the scoring in the second when Marshall McFarland sniped a shot to the top corner. Isaac Langdon and Cole McGuire assisted on the goal. Jacob Gilbert scored early in the third. The puck took a strange bounce off the boards on a dump in from Curtis Dicks and ended up on Gilbert's stick in front of the net. Gilbert made no mistake in burying this golden opportunity. Whitby took 7 penalties in the third period and Cooper Rogers scored a power play goal in the final minute of play on a feed from McGuire as Quinte won 3-0. Nick McGowan earned the shut out and Sam Dingle back stopped the win over Kingston.
Madison Excavating - Major Atom
The Madison Excavating Major Atoms celebrated the holiday season with another 3 wins in league play to add another 6 points. On Dec. 21, the Major Atoms played host to the Oshawa Generals for a midweek matchup at the Marmora arena. The first period saw the teams battle back and forth but saw no score by the end of the set. The Generals struck first to take a 1-0 early second period lead but the Devils wasted no time to tie up the game on a shot from Jared Langdon, assisted by Ty McCambridge. Langdon would add another before the end of the second to make it a 2-1 game in the Devils favour. In the third it was Braedyn Rogers on the assist from Beckett Ewart and Langdon to make it 3-1. With the Generals goalie pulled in the dying minutes of the third period Landon Wright added the security of an empty netter to give the Devils a 4-1 win. Glen McInnes guarded the net for the Devils.
Dec. 27 had the Devils at home again but this time in Belleville at the QSWC to host the Central Ontario Wolves. It was Ben Danford from the point, on the assist from Ewart and Ty Therrien who hit the scoreboard first to give Quinte the lead at the end of the first. Therrien would add one of his own early in the second, assisted by Ewart and Landgon. Kirk Stevenson added one on the set up from Gage Butcher and Carson Campbell to make it 3-0 Devils before the third. While the Wolves snuck one by netminder Dean Spry, it would be the only one to get by him. Quinte went on to add another 4 goals in the third to take the decisive 7-1 win. Scoring in the third were Butcher, Rogers, Stevenson and Langdon. Assisting were Liam Philip, Brody Partridge, Thomas Kuipers, Wright, McCambridge and Campbell.
The Devils took to the road on Friday, Dec. 30 to take on the Petes at the Evinrude in Peterborough. The Devils spread out their offence over all three periods, adding one each set to take a 3-1 win over the physical Petes team. Langdon went to work for the Devils getting them on the scoreboard first with the assists from Rogers and Therrien. Ewart added his in the second, assisted by Langdon and Therrien. Peterborough would add one in the second to make it a one goal game but Philip came out in the third to score and seal the 3-1 victory. Assisting on the third was Partridge and Danford. Glen McInnes was in net for the Devils.
On Deck: On Saturday, Jan. 7 the Madison Excavating Major Atoms will host the Markham Waxers in Marmora at 3pm. Sunday, Jan. 8th, the Devils will head up the road to Whitby to face the Wildcats at the McKinney at 4:15pm.
KKP - Minor Atom
The KKP Minor Atom's took part in the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa this past weekend. In game 1, the Devils took on the top-ranked team from Ottawa, Kanata Blazers. Quinte put forth one of their best efforts of the season only to see the hosts score in the last minute to secure a 3-3 tie. Deke Osterhout, Ben Graham, and Avery Wease scored for the Devils. In game 2, Quinte defeated Gloucester Rangers Green 4-1 in a spirited affair. Graham, Wease, Kaiden Harmon, and Carter Chadwick provided the offence. On day 2 of the tournament, Quinte's season-long nemesis - a lack of scoring - came back to haunt the team in a pair of one-goal losses which ultimately eliminated them on a tie-breaker. In game 3, the Devils dropped a 2-1 decision to Nepean with Alec Asimis scoring. In game 4, Quinte spotted Gloucester Rangers White an early 3-0 lead before fighting back with goal by Jake Sage and Mason Musclow only to see their comeback attempt fall short in a 3-2 loss, in the process ending their tournament.
