Here is the Weekly Report from week 1 of the QRD 2023-24 hockey season...
The Free Flow Petroleum Red Devils Skate to a Quarter Final Finish at the Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament in London
The U16 Red Devils played six games in London this week at the Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament. Game one on Thursday evening, the Devils faced off against the Burlington Eagles but struggled to find momentum. Scoring the Devils’ lone goal was Jacob Moore (unassisted) as the team fell 4-1 to the Eagles with Noah Groeneveld taking the loss in net.
Game two Friday morning, Quinte played the Tournament finalists, Elgin Middlesex Canucks. Held off the scoreboard for a period and a half and trailing by 2, Liam Campbell (Matthew Airhart) and Jean-Cristoph Lemieux (Moore) found the net at the close of the 2ndframe to tie things up. In the 3rd, Lemieux (Liam Grant), Grant (Lemieux), and Mickael Fournier (unassisted) combined for three unanswered goals. Otsirakatste Brant provided early support to the Devils and earned the win in net.
On Friday afternoon, the Devils faced the Brantford 99ers in their third game of the tournament. The 99ers opened scoring in the 1st but Lemieux, assisted by Airhart, answered second later to even things up. Also finding the net in the 1st frame was Campbell (Dagenais) and Lesser (Grant and Matt Hicks). The Devils kept rolling in the 2nd with Ulrick Desgagné, assisted by Dagenais and Hicks finding the net, followed by Campbell who got his second of the game, assisted by Dagenais and Desgagné. In the 3rd Dagenais widened the Devils lead, potting two (Campbell and Fournier). Brant was in net for the Devils 7-2 win.
Saturday, the Devils faced the Thunderbay Kings. Quinte came out on the right side of a physical game, with Rhett Colson (Desgagné and Dagenais) opening scoring and Airhart (Lemieux and Grant) netting the game winner. Groeneveld was solid between the pipes for the 2-1 victory. With the win, Quinte wrapped the Round Robin 3-1-0, qualifying for elimination play.
In the first game of the elimination rounds, Quinte faced the York Simcoe Express. Campbell from Dagenais, gave the Devils the lead mid-way through the 1st period. On the power play, Martin Brassard (Grant) found the net to widen Quinte’s lead, but YSE answered with a power play goal of their own. Dagenais (Lemieux and Campbell) responded in the dying seconds of the 1st. Through the 2nd, YSE netted one goal, while Quinte forwards Desgagné (Campbell and Dagenais) and Lemieux (Grant) each hit the twine. In the 3rd, YSE capitalized as Quinte got itself into penalty trouble, putting up two goals to close the gap. Brant shut the door in net and the Devils secured a 5-4 win to move on to the quarter finals Sunday morning.
In their quarter final match, Quinte faced the Whitby Wildcats. Grant, on a helper from Airhart opened scoring seconds into the game. In the final minute of the 1st, Whitby answered to start the 2nd tied. Early in the 2nd, Desgagné (Dagenais and Fournier) regained the lead for the Devils. Airhart (Fournier and Campbell) put up a power play goal to end the period 3-1. Though Desgagné (Dagenais and Campbell) would pot his second of the game, Whitby found the net four times in the 3rd to take the lead and end Quinte’s run at the tourney. Groeneveld took the 5-4 loss in net.
ON DECK: The Free Flow Petroleum U16s host the Clarington Toros Wednesday, Oct. 11th at QSWC for their home opener. Puck drops at 8:15pm.

After a long off season, the Gillespie’s Tree Service U14 Quinte Red Devils kicked off their season with a busy 3 game week, resulting in 2 ties and 1 loss.
We kicked the week off in Belleville Wednesday night vs. the Kingston Jr. Gaels, the Devils worked hard but ran into penalty trouble and found themselves down 4-2 late in the third period. The team rallied and buried two quick goals in the dying minutes of the game to even it out and finish the game with a tie. Goals were scored by Clow (2), Dahle and Whelan. M. Aird, B. Aird, Dahle, Peeters, Whelan (2) and Clow all adding assists.
The next test was in Oshawa Saturday night where the team ran into a very hot goalie. After outshooting the Generals by a significant amount, the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Goals coming from Lowry, Clow and Dahle while helpers came from Whelan (2), Jones, Dahle, B. Aird and Harold.
Rounding out the weekend was a tough matchup in Baltimore Sunday afternoon where the team lost their first game of the year 2-1 to the Waxers. The lone goal was scored by Clow and assisted by Dahle and B. Aird.
ON DECK: The team will travel to Barrie and Rama this coming weekend to take on the Barrie Jr. Colts and North Central Predators.

The Bonn Law QRD U13 Red Devils are off to a great start in league play, after a 9-1 win to kick off the season.
The Red Devils hosted The Barrie Colts to a Thanksgiving Sunday tilt at The CAA Arena on Sunday afternoon. It was a fast paced, tight checking first period, before Miller NIcholson got his team on the board, assisted by Tyler Martin. The Devils would take the 1-0 lead into the second period, and then really went to work, scoring 4 goals in each of the next two periods. Lighting the lamp in the second period was Cameron Stevens, Fisher Kernohan, Thomas Marsden and Brody Grant. Assists going to Shea Teather (2), Kyler Patterson, Mason Whalen, Kernohan, Stevens, Grant. James Gullage led the way in the third period, scoring two goals and adding two helpers. Rowyn Haley and Kyler Patterson each added singles in the period to round out the scoring. Chipping in with assists in the final period; Haley (2), Patterson (2), Martin and Noah Hughes. Dax Sage was solid between the pipes for the win on his 12th Birthday. Thomas Marsden was named the hardest working player of the game.
ON DECK: The Bonn Law U13 Red Devils are headed North for a road trip Oct 13-15. They will start off in Barrie on Friday evening. On Saturday, the Devils have a double header (YSE & Barrie), before closing out the weekend on Sunday vs The North Central Predators.

The U12 Madison Excavating Quinte Red Devils kicked off their regular season with a showdown in Pickering against the Raiders on Thursday night.
The game got off to a slow beginning; there were no goals scored by either team in the first period. It didn’t take long after the puck was dropped to start the second, for Cooper Plumley to find the back of the net, giving QRD a 1-0 lead. The advantage was short-lived, however, when the Raiders would answer back with a goal of their own, just thirty-six seconds later. The third period began with the score tied at one, and it didn’t change until halfway through, when the Raiders scored the game-winning goal on a power play. Despite the 2-1 loss, goaltender, Ben Larmer, made numerous rebound saves, keeping his team in the game.
It was also an exciting weekend for The Madison Excavating QRD U12s, as they played their home opener on Saturday in Belleville, hosting the Barrie Junior Colts. Both teams played incredibly well, matching each other’s energy and drive. Halfway through the first period, the Colts snuck one past the Quinte goaltender on a breakaway, to open the scoring. Kade Osterhout evened the score at one in the second period, when he tipped a pass from Everett Brown, past Barrie’s goaltender. The score remained tied at one going into the third, and it was anyone’s game. Unfortunately, with six minutes and forty-three seconds left until the final buzzer, the Colts scored their second goal, which proved to be the game-winner. In spite of the 2-1 loss, the Red Devils showed resilience through some incredibly challenging moments. In net, Hayden Tripp stood tall, keeping the game close throughout.
The Madison Excavating QRD U12s then travelled to Aurora on Sunday to challenge the York Simcoe Express. The Express came ready to play, but the previous game’s losses had lit a fire under the Red Devils. QRD came out hungry and were incredibly determined to earn a win. The first goal came from the Express, with under a minute left in the first period. Kade Osterhout then buried the puck two consecutive times, both set up by Everett Brown, less than one minute apart, to put the Devils in the lead. Quinte was on top by one going into the third period. Eleven minutes passed before York Simcoe could tie things up at two. QRD regrouped, and Osterhout completed the hat trick, with a mere twenty-one seconds left in the game, when Dylan Chalk won a key faceoff back to the point to Max Bucknell, who quickly found Osterhout in front of the net for the game-winner. Goaltender, Ben Larmer, demonstrated a solid effort between the pipes, making key saves to help lead the team to success.

The 417 Bus Line U11 Red Devils start the regular season with a win!
After starting the pre-season with a few exhibition games and an overtime loss in the finals at the Pat Larock Memorial Tournament in Peterborough, the U11s came out of the gate flying in their first regular season game of the year.
Saturday, they faced off against the Markham Waxers at home (CAA) and skated to a 11-1 win. Linden Ludolph led the way in the goal department picking up the hat trick. Jaxon Elrick, Graydon Tucker, Cohen Reid, Matt Dawson, Noah Gilchrist, Kash Nelson, Evan Andrews and Will Beebe all found the back of the net as well. Assists in the game went to Dawson (3), Ryker Thompson (2), Gilchrist (2), Nelson (2), Ludolph, Beebe, Andrews, Tucker, Malkin Courtney and Reid. Lily Groeneveld picked up the win in net and Ludolph was named Player Of The Game.
ON DECK: The 417 Bus Line U11 Red Devils head to London next weekend to take part in the Drew Doughty Tournament. They have round robin games against the Grey Bruce Highlanders, Waterloo Warriors, and the Mississauga Senators.

The Breakaway Fuels Quinte U10s Start the Season with Two Wins
The Breakaway Fuels Quinte U10s kicked off their regular season by hosting the York Simcoe Express for a Thanksgiving double header on October 7th. After a slow start the young devils found themselves trailing 1-0 after the first. From the drop of the puck in the second it was all Quinte as Kolton Solmes found the back of the net less than two minutes into the period with an assist to Kai Mackie. That momentum carried on and less than three minutes later Avery Thickson lit the lamp with McKinley Gunning and Mackie drawing the assists. Late in the period Ethan Dowling scored from Gunning to give the team a 3-1 lead heading into the third. Quinte’s relentless forecheck and great puck movement led to four more goals in the third. Scoring in the third was Tripp Plumley, Dowling, Mackie and Reid Haley. Assists went to Jaxon Scott (2), Thickson, Mackie and Solmes. The Top Devil was awarded to McKinley Gunning. Stellar work between the pipes in this one was provided by Jordan Andrews.
Between games the U10 team welcomed the YSE players and families to a Thanksgiving potluck and then it was back on the ice at 4pm for game 2.
Once again, the Express came out flying but this time Quinte was ready and found themselves in the lead with a late first period goal by Dowling off a rebound from a shot by Mackie. The second period was a lot like game one as the Red Devils took off and scored 4 more to take a 5-1 lead into the third. Scoring in the second was Evan VanEgmond on a stretch pass from Solmes. Following that up was Dowling on a sick cross crease pass from Mackie. VanEgmond would get his second of the game and Thickson his second of the day before the period was done. Jackson Simpson completed the scoring in the third for a 6-1 win. Others hitting the score sheet with additional assists were Wade Robinson, Solmes Mackie and Haley. Deacon Vos provided some outstanding saves for his first league win of the season. The Top Devil was given to Evan VanEgmond.
