QRD Weekly Report #17 - Monday Feb 19, 2024
Here is the weekly report for the week ending Sunday Feb 18, 2024. The regular season has ended, and playoffs have begun...

The McInroy Maines U18 Quinte Red Devils finished up their regular season and started the round robin play downs for the 23/24 season.

The final game of the season had the Devils on the road to Whitby. After a scoreless first, it was the Devils that took the lead in the second with a goal from Theo Lavender on the set up from Kadan Byne and Avery Wease. Brody Nielissen would make it 2-0 early in the third, assisted by Evan Erwin and Byne. Two unanswered goals from Whitby would force an OT. Unfortunately, the Devils would lose in overtime. Benjamin Lind-Milkevist was in net.

Game one of the playoff schedule had the Devils host the Barrie Colts. After a couple early goals by Barrie, the Devils made it a 1-2 game by the end of the first with Lavender scoring on a pass from Connor Weido. A tough second would leave the Devils further behind and end with a loss of 2-7. Scoring in the third was Evan Erwin, assisted by Isaac Krentz and Deacon Ellis.  Net minding was shared by both goalies.

ON DECK: The McInroy Maines team will host Whitby on Wednesday at QSWC and take to the road Friday and Saturday to face York-Simcoe and Peterborough.

The Free Flow Petroleum U16s Roll into Playoffs on a Win

Wednesday night the Devils traveled to Peterborough for their last game of the regular season. The Petes got on the board first but Jean- Cristoph Lemieux (Maddox Dagenais and Martin Brassard) answered minutes later. In the second, Dagenais scored twice, assisted by Lemieux and Rhett Colson, and Matthew Airhart and Noah Lesser adding to QRD’s tally. Peterborough also hit the net once before the end of the period. Starting the third, Dagenais (Lemieux and Airhart) scored again for the hat trick. Airhart (Dagenais and Lemieux) followed up to widen Quinte’s lead. Some penalty trouble gave Peterborough the opportunity to respond but Airhart (Dagenais) potted an empty net goal at the end of the third to call game. Noah Groeneveld made some big saves early to keep Quinte in the game and claim the 6-4 win in net.

On Sunday, the U16s started their playoff run heading to Markham to face the Waxers. Opening scoring for the Devils in the first was Dagenais on a feed from Matt Hicks. In the second frame, Dagenais (Airhart and Liam Campbell) scored again to double Quinte’s lead. Penalties in the thirds resulted in two goals for Markham, sending the game to overtime. Netting his second hat trick of the week Dagenais (Campbell) found the net three minutes into OT to end the game in Quinte’s favour. Otsirakatste Brant was solid between the pipes for the 3-2 victory.

The Madison Excavating U12s with split results this week

On Wednesday night in Markham, the Madison Excavating U12 Quinte Red Devils faced off against the Waxers. It was a heated showdown, with both teams battling hard on the ice for dominance. The Waxers were first to find the back of the net, capitalizing on powerplay, less than two minutes before the end of the first period. As the action resumed in the second frame, the Waxers extended their lead to 3-0 with two more goals. The Devils refused to back down, and minutes later, they notched their first goal of the game. The Waxers extinguished hopes of a comeback for QRD, adding a fourth goal to their tally. The Devils answered back with their second goal of the game. Heading into the final period, however, the score still favoured the Waxers at 4-2. The Devils rallied in the final period, scoring a third goal, but it wasn’t enough to win the game. The Waxers managed to hold on to their slim lead, and the Devils took a 4-3 loss.

In a gripping game on home ice against the Petes on Sunday, it was clear that both teams were hungry for a victory. In the first period, both teams showcased tight defensive play and strong goaltending, skillfully thwarting each other's offensive efforts. In the second period, it was the Devils who struck first, breaking the deadlock midway through the period with a well-executed goal. Despite relentless pressure from the Petes, the Devils held firm to maintain their narrow lead as the period drew to a close. Just a minute and a half into the third frame, Quinte extended their lead with a second goal. Minutes later, they struck again, bolstering their lead to three and seizing control of the game. The Petes refused to go down without a fight, as they took advantage of a five-on-three powerplay, scoring just five minutes and forty seconds before the final buzzer. QRD’s hard work and solid team play resulted in a 3-1 win to end their week.

Coach’s Corner with Head Coach, Evan Osterhout: “The team has shown a lot of grit in recent weeks and just continues to keep practicing, playing, working hard, and having through it all.”

Breakaway Fuels U10s Secure First in East

With two strong showings this weekend to finish the regular season the Breakaway Fuels U10’s captured first place in the OMHA east. Saturday saw the young devils take on the Markham Waxers on sponsor appreciation day.  The pregame ceremony apparently was still on the kids minds when the puck dropped as the Waxers scored 10 seconds into the game.  The group rebounded well and scored 8 unanswered before allowing a late one to the Waxers. Kai Mackie led the way in this one with 5 goals.  Singles went to Reid Haley, Evan VanEgmond and Tripp Plumley.  Assists were spread around with Kolton Solmes (3), Ethan Dowling (2), Mckinley Gunning (2), Silas Templar, Jackson Simpson, Ryder Bradford, Jax Scott and Haley all chipping in.  Jordan Andrews got the win in net.

To finish the regular season, they hosted the Oshawa Generals in Warkworth on Sunday afternoon.  The boys started better and had built a 2-0 lead on goals by Mackie (Dowling, Solmes) and Solmes (Dowling) before the Generals would cut the lead in half late in the first.  That would be all that would get by Deacon Vos, in net.  The young Devils poured it on in the last two periods and finished the season with a convincing 7-1 win.  Other goals scorers were Dowling (Mackie), Mason Cooke (VanEgmond), Mackie (Greyson Rennie, Solmes), Jackson Simpson and Tripp Plumley.

ON DECK: Next week has the Breakaway Fuels boys starting their playoffs.  We host the Central Ontario Wolves Saturday at 1pm at the Keeler Centre in Coleborne. Sunday they are on the road for a double header visiting Clarington at noon and Markham at 5pm.
