Environmental 360 Solutions U16 AAA Quinte Red Devils pick up two important wins...
Chase Cybulskie scored the unassisted game winner, snapping a 2-2 tie at 1:55 of the third period while killing a penalty as the U16 Red Devils toppled the first-place York-Simcoe Express 3-2 at the CAA Arena Sunday. The victory, Quinte’s second in-a-row, came two days after they’d won an hour away at the Invista Centre over the Kingston Gaels 3-1, and it marked the Devils’ first win against the Express in three tries this season.
The four important points picked up last week were enough to stretch Quinte’s lead to two points over the fifth-place Peterborough Petes in the OMHA East Conference standings. Those same four points also moved them to within four of the third-place Ajax-Pickering Raiders and left them five points behind the second-place Barrie Colts, who are currently riding an 11-game winning streak. Despite Saturday’s loss to Quinte, York-Simcoe was able to leapfrog Barrie by a single point Sunday, taking first place from the Colts with a 6-0 trouncing of Central Ontario. Ajax-Pickering and Peterborough also won Sunday.
Ryan Sherwin got the Devils on the board first against York-Simcoe, giving them a 1-0 lead half-way through the first period, but the Express got out of the set even at a goal apiece and went ahead 2-1 in the second frame, with both goals coming on the powerplay. From that point on goalie Ayden Mullen completely shut the door on York-Simcoe, affording Quinte the opportunity to knock off the conference’s top team, and they took full advantage of the situation. Before the middle period was over the Devils’ Ryan Foley knotted the score 2-2 prior to Cybulskie’s clinching tally early in the third, which gave Quinte one of their biggest wins of the winter. Supplying assists were Wyatt Whalen, Mac Chisholm, Ty Leavitt and Cybulskie.
Lily Reid stood tall in the Devils’ net Thursday in Kingston, backstopping Quinte to the 3-1 triumph while Sherwin, Chisholm and Leavitt erased a 1-0 Gaels lead with unanswered goals after a scoreless first period. Sherwin and Chisholm both scored in the second period then Leavitt’s marker added some third-period insurance. Leavitt also counted an assist with Jake Gawley, Nick Colson and Cybulskie getting on the scoresheet with a helper each.
ON DECK...the Gaels will make the short trip down the 401 Tuesday (Jan 14) to take on the Red Devils at the CAA in Quinte’s second match of a four-game home stand. Four of the Devils next five games will go at home with five of their remaining seven regular season contests taking place in Belleville. This coming Sunday they welcome the Markham Waxers onto the CAA pad at 1:30.
The Gillespie's Tree Service U15 AAA Quinte Red Devils started up the second half of their regular season over the weekend with a pair of games. The Peterborough Petes came to town on Saturday afternoon for the second meeting of the year between the teams. A short staffed squad took the ice on a mission to gain some ground on one of the few teams they are looking to catch in the standings. A tight checking game saw a scoreless first period for both teams before Trent Clow forced a turnover along the boards and buried the opening goal to put the Red Devils up 1-0. Before the end of the second frame John Korver would bang home a Jack Sutton rebound to go up 2-0. That was all the offence QRD would need to bring home a 2-1 win. Sunday saw a road trip to Markham to take on the Waxers in the second game between these teams as well. Lawson Minifie got the party started finishing off some nice passing from Jax Martin and Andrew Dewar to put QRD up 1-0. Trent Clow was next on the scoresheet banging in a rebound off a point shot from Dewar. Minifie also picked up a helper on that goal. Markham also potted 2 goals in the first to send the game to the break tied, but that is as close as they would get as the Quinte offence kicked into high gear. Martin batted home a loose puck on a 5 on 3 PP to put QRD up 3-2 after 2. Minifie snuck behind the Markham D and took a long bank pass from Dewar to add a 4th goal to the Devils tally early in the 3rd and Ewan Dahle added the finishing touches burying a Markham turnover to make the final 5-2 QRD. Nathan Ferriss was the backstop both games this weekend as QRD picked up a much needed 4 out of 4 points and climbed back up to 3rd in the standings.
This week sees a pair of home contests as Wednesday evening they host Central Ontario and Saturday sees York Simcoe come to town for the rubber match in that season series. Wednesday night's action starts up at 8:30 on the CAA pad and Saturday afternoon sees a 5:45 puck drop on the Mackay pad.

On Sunday, the Devils would travel to Markham to face The Waxers for the second time this season.
