The Environmental 360 Solutions U16 Red Devils placed four points shy of a berth in the OMHA Championships, falling out of contention on the final afternoon of the East Conference round-robin playoffs, thanks to a 4-0 loss in Bowmanville to the North Shore Whitecaps that put the brakes on a modest two-game Quinte win streak.

The Red Devils had to settle for third place in the conference’s six-team ‘B’ Pool, going 5-3-0-and-2 for 12 points, but to qualify for the OMHA tournament they needed a top-two finish.  Instead, it was North Shore who grabbed second place when they polished off Quinte.  Sunday’s 4-0 win gave the Whitecaps 16 points on an 8-and-2 record, while a Devils victory would have knotted the teams at 14 points and forced a one-game decider in Belleville on Monday.

Both North Shore and the ‘B’ Pool’s front-running York-Simcoe Express moved on to the OMHA finals along with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders and Barrie Colts from the five-team ‘A’ Pool.  York-Simcoe collected 18 points, boasting an impressive 9-and-1 slate to claim top spot, overall, in the East.  Their lone loss was a 5-2 beating at the hands of the Devils.  In addition to the four East Conference clubs, four teams from the West Conference will advance to the championship tourney with Oakville, Halton and Niagara qualifying to date.  The Championships will take place from March 14-16 at the Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville.

Sunday’s defeat by North Shore also went at the Rickard Rec Complex, and home ice proved an invaluable asset for the Whitecaps as they romped to their most important win of the season thus far, at Quinte’s expense.  The Devils trailed 1-0 after one period and they fell behind 2-0 in the second set before North Shore added another pair in the third to eliminate Quinte.

In Whitby Saturday the Devils won their second game in a five-day span over the Wildcats, outscoring them 3-1 following a 4-2 triumph at home the previous Tuesday.  Lily Reid was solid in net on Saturday, allowing just one goal in a game that had to be won to keep Quinte’s post-season alive and their hopes of an OMHA championship intact.  The winners scored once in each period with Chase Cybulskie, Henry Fisher and Ryan Foley doing the Devils damage.  Chipping in with assists were Ty Leavitt, Seth Scaletta, Blake Munnings, Isaac Tracze and Cybulskie.

Quinte kickstarted their two-game win string last Tuesday (March 4) at the CAA Arena, doubling up on Whitby 4-2.  Nate Rashotte paced the Devils with two goals while Fisher and Ryan Sherwin scored one apiece as Quinte took a 4-0 lead into the third frame before the Wildcats were able to put two past Devils’ goalie Ayden Mullen late in the game.  Fisher also had an assist for Quinte with Munnings counting three.  Cole Rowat (2), Leavitt and Mac Chisholm picked up the other assists.

ON DECK...Although this Devils squad brought home the ‘Red Hats’ as OMHA champions at the U15 level last year with a majority of the same players, this year’s club won’t get the opportunity to win it all as U16s.  But these kids have a lot to look forward to with what’s on deck.  After seven successful seasons together as Red Devils, this group will now splinter as a team and individually graduate to ‘bigger-and-better' things as their hockey careers enter a new and exciting era full of opportunities to further develop as players and young adults.  Good luck to each and every member of the Quinte U16 Red Devils in your future endevours both on and off the ice.

The Gillespie's Tree Service U15 AAA Quinte Red Devils continued their march to the Red Hats this week with 3 playoff games. Wednesday saw the Greater Kingston Junior Gaels come to the RCAF Arena for the squad's first hosting duties in these playoffs. The tight checking affair saw no scoring until the 3rd period when Andrew Laurin took an outlet pass from Jack Beebe almost the length of the ice and opened the scoring with what would eventually stand as the game winner. Coen Lowry added an insurance marker late in the 3rd batting home the rebound off a Lauchlan Whelan effort. The squad handed Kinston their first loss of the playoffs and gained a valuable 2 points. A short turnaround saw the team head up the 401 to Whitby on Thursday for the first playoff meeting with the Wildcats. A tentative first period by both teams saw a scoreless tie after 1 period of play. Whitby would open the scoring early in the second period before an offensive explosion for Quinte late in the frame. Andrew Laurin got things rolling taking a breakout pass from Brechen Aird most of the length of the ice to open the scoring for the Red Devils. The very next shift saw Lawson Minifie bang home a Lauchlan Whelan rebound and Aird fire home a seeing eye shot with helpers from Jax Martin and Minifie for a 3-1 QRD lead to close out the 2nd frame. A power play opportunity saw Lauchlan Whelan take a Spencer Harold pass through the Wolves squad to put Quinte up 4-1. Whitby would get one back before Ewan Dahle would bury a Minifie feed for a 5-2 QRD win and another valuable 2 points in the playoffs. The squad closed the week out with yet another road trip, this time to visit the Markham Waxers. Coen Lowry would open the scoring early in the first tipping home an Andrew Laurin point shot on the power play for a 1-0 Red Devils lead. Markham would hit the scoresheet twice before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead to the break. Spencer Harold held up the Markham attack at his own blue line and hit Jax Martin after the turnover. John Kover would bang home the rebound off the Martin shot to draw QRD even at 2-2. Late second period pressure saw Trent Clow knock home a Laurin rebound to put the Red Devils up 3-2 heading into the flood. The Waxers would tie the game midway through the 3rd before Austin Preston buried a Markham turnover to put QRD in front for good. Noah Kennedy added an insurance marker late in the 3rd on the powerplay after some great work down low by Clow and Martin. Nathan Ferriss was outstanding in net denying Markham several great opportunities throughout the game. That win made it 4 in a row for the Red Devils and moved them to the top of the table in a very competitive playoff pool.

This week sees a pair of home games as the squad closes out their playoff series with the Central Ontario Wolves and Whitby. The Wolves come to town on Wednesday night for an 8pm puck drop and Whitby will make the trek down on Sunday afternoon for a 3pm start. Both games are slated to be at the RCAF Arena.

Tuesday, March 4th, vs. North Shore Whitecaps
The Madison Excavating QRD U13s battled hard on home ice Tuesday night in Game 3 of the playoffs, but fell short in a 3-2 overtime heartbreaker against the North Shore Whitecaps. After a scoreless first period, Coulter Watson broke the deadlock late in the second, burying a feed from Cooper Plumley and Blake McManus. The Whitecaps responded in the third at 6:33, but Kaiden Sprackett quickly restored the lead for Quinte, capitalizing on a setup from Blake Sills. With just 1:23 left in the game, North Shore forced overtime with a power play goal. Despite a solid performance from QRD’s goaltender, Hayden Tripp, the Whitecaps netted the OT winner, sealing the loss for Quinte.

Sunday, March 9th, @ Central Ontario Wolves
The Red Devils then hit the road Sunday for Game 4 of the playoffs in Woodville, against the Central Ontario Wolves. The game’s lone goal came just over a minute into the first, as the Wolves struck early. From there, it was a back-and-forth battle, but neither team could find the back of the net.
