The Breakaway Fuels U11 Red Devils were in Kingston on the weekend competing in the OMHA Championship.
The tournament started off rough when the boys dropped a tight one to East rivals the Central Ontario Wolves 2-1 on Friday morning. This left them with must win games from that point on in order to make Sunday and they delivered. Friday evening they faced off against the Guelph Gryphons. This one was a close back and forth affair and saw the teams deadlocked heading into the third 2-2. Guelph would score an early powerplay goal to go up 3-2 but the young Devils dug down and scored three straight to take the win 5-2.
Saturday saw the kids face off against a talented Hamilton Steel team in their only game of the day. This one was Quinte's game and with one in the first, two in the second and another in the third the U11's would prevail and advance to Championship Sunday with a final score of 4-1.
Sunday morning had the semifinal puck drop at 9:15 and saw the Breakaway boys facing the Barrie Colts. Once again the boys were ready and controlled the game from start to finish and walked away with a convincing 5-2 victory to put themselves into the championship game for the coveted red hats.
Championships final kicked off at 2pm in front of a huge crowd on the CUPE pad at Invista against the top team from OMHA West the Southern Tier Admirals.
The Admirals would strike first on an early powerplay just over three minutes in. This game had lots of chances and both goalies made some outstanding saves. The first period would finish 1-0. Another early goal would put the Admirals up 2-0 before Jayden Stehlik would score a powerplay goal from Silas Templar and Charlie Dwyer to cut the lead in half around the midway mark of the second. We would head to the third with the Admirals still holding that tight one goal lead. Once again the Admirals would go up by two on another powerplay goal less than a minute into the frame. Ethan Dowling would score another Red Devils power play goal from Jackson Simpson and Kai Mackie with 6 minutes remaining to bring the score to 3-2. The young Devils would empty the tank down the stretch but they couldn't get a bounce and would ultimately fall 3-2 and take home the silver medals.
The coaching staff couldn't be more proud of the boys for an outstanding season and they should all hold their heads high for what they have accomplished over the last seven months both on and off the ice.
