The Bonn Law QRD U14 AAA team traveled to Detroit this weekend, along with 13 other top teams from North America, to play in the Little Caesar’s Challenger Series.
On Thursday, The Red Devils faced the high powered Pens Elite team in their first game of the tournament. The Devils opened up the scoring early in the first period with a goal from Kyler Patterson, assisted by James Gullage and Brody Grant. The Pens struck back a minute later and the teams exchanged goals in the first two periods, before The Pens opened it up in the 3rd scoring 4 unanswered goals on their way to a 8-3 win. Also scoring for the Red Devils; Miller Nicholson and James Gullage. Chipping in with assists was Austin Simpson and Noah Hughes.
On Friday morning, The Devils would face The Chicago Mission. Once again, The Devils opened up the scoring early in the game on a goal from Mason Whalen, but could not find the back of the net again in the game, and fell to the Mission by a score of 6-1.
In their second game of the day, 12 hours later, the Red Devils would face a very talented Midfairfield Team. In a fast paced, back and forth game that had fans on the edge of their seats, it was MF who skated away with the 3-2 win. Matt Travers had a strong game in net for the Devils. Brody Grant and Austin Pettey did the scoring for their team, while Pettey and Tyler Martin chipped in with assists.
On Saturday, The Red Devils would start the day against The Chicago Reapers. Once again, the game was fast paced and physical. Austin Pettey scored in the first period of the game to even the score at one, before the Rangers added two more goals, taking a 3-1 lead into the 3rd period. Dax Sage made a few key saves in the final period of the game, as The Devils turned it on. Noah Hughes found the back of the net with a beauty shot on a pass from Pettey. With the Goalie out in the final minute, James Gullage buried a rebound off of a rush by Noah Hughes and tied the game with 27 seconds left.
The Red Devils carried the momentum from the earlier game that day, into a 5:00 pm game vs Little Caesar’s. In a very competitive game, where teams exchanged scoring chances and body checks, it was Matt Travers who put on a goaltending clinic and Noah Hughes who lit the lamp twice in a huge 2-1 win! Assisting on the goals; Whalen (2), Nicholson.
In their 6th game of the weekend, The Red Devils would face the LA Kings in a consolation game Sunday morning. Both teams scored a goal each in the first period and two in the second. Dax Sage shut the door in the third, and Mason Whalen buried the game winning goal on a beauty pass from Rowyn Haley, with 4 minutes left in the game. Also scoring for The Devils in the win; Austin Simpson, Austin Pettey and Kyler Patterson. Haley added 2 more assists and Holden Goulah and chipped in an assist as well.
The Red Devils would like to Thank Little Caesar’s for a great tournament and look forward to the invite again next September.
