The Gillespie's Tree Service U15 Red Devils were on the road for a pair of contests this weekend looking to continue their climb towards the top of the East standings.
Saturday saw a trip up the 400 for their third and final regular season contest with the league leading Barrie Colts. After digging an early 2-0 hole, QRD got on the board with Jax Martin banging home a nice faceoff win by Lauchlan Whelan. Barrie would add another one and take a 3-1 lead into the 1st intermission. The 2nd period would see the teams trading a goal each way. The team's powerplay stayed hot with Andrew Dewar capitalizing on a turned over puck in the Barrie end to make the score 4-2 heading into the 3rd. Barrie would strike early again, but QRD battled hard for the last 20 minutes. Andrew Laurin finished off a great passing play with Noah Kennedy and Trent Clow on the power play and Whelan took advantage of another Barrie turnover in their own end to make the score 5-4. Unfortunately this is as close as the game would get and the squad would make the long trek home to regroup and get ready for Sunday's contest.
The next day would see another trip North, this time on the 404, to faceoff with the streaking York Simcoe Express for the first time this season. The first period saw both teams feeling each other out and ended in a scoreless draw. Andrew Laurin would get things started on the scoresheet in the 2nd frame finishing off a well played 2 on 1 feed from Lauchlan Whelan. Jax Martin also picked up a helper on the play. YSE would answer back before Lawson Minife finished off break off after a long feed from Spencer Harold to Ewan Dahle allowing the squad to a take a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period. QRD kept rolling with Austin Preston scoring to go up 3-1 before the Express got on the board again. Andrew Dewar buried one from the high slot with assists going to Whelan and Martin to stretch the lead to 4-2 and Whelan added the dagger from long range into an empty net with helpers added by Brechyn Aird and Laurin. The 5-3 victory snapped the Express' 11 game winning streak.
This week sees a Wednesday night home contest with the North Shore Storm before another trip up the 404 to visit the Express again on Sunday. Puck drop on Wednesday is at 8:30 on the CAA pad at the Wellness Centre and Sunday's action gets underway at 5:30 in the La Brier Family Arena on the Campus of St Andrew's College.
