This weekend saw the Breakaway Fuels U10 Red Devils head
East to take part in the Taylor Hall Cup.
In round robin play the young Devils went 4-0 with wins
Friday over the Nepean Raiders (6-1) and Ottawa Sting (4-1). Saturday they continued to keep their foot on
the gas with wins over the Kanata Blazers (8-0) and Cumberland Grads (7-2).
With the first place seed in hand it was off to Sunday. They would face the hometown Junior Gaels at
8am. The boys came out firing scoring 3
goals in the first 3mins en route to a convincing 10-1 win and a spot in the
finals against the Hamilton Steel.
The finals would be a back and forth affair. Hamilton came to play and got an early
powerplay goal to take a 1-0 lead. Quinte
would even the score late in the first and take a 2-1 lead by the end of the
second. That would set the stage for a
wild third. Quinte jumped to a 3-1 lead
early into the period but two goals 14 seconds apart by a determined Hamilton
team would tie the score at 3. The final
8 mins was wide open and end to end. The
young devils unfazed by the quick turn of events continued to pressure and would
score three straight in a span two minutes and thirty five seconds. The pesky Steel again, answered quick to make
it 6-4 and despite some late pressure the Devils held on for the 6-4
championship win.
The coaching staff is extremely proud of all the players for
grinding out a long weekend and another big tournament win.
Next weekend sees the Breakaway boys get back to
league play. They face Clarington in
Marmora on Saturday at noon and then head back to Kingston for a game against the
Junior Gaels on Sunday.
